Day 165: A Non-Musician Writing Music: "Morning's Come"

I'm not a super musician. I understand musical notes. I can pick out a tune on the piano. But I always have lyrics wrapped up in my head. Thought I'd post a song that I've had rumbling around in my head for while. While, I'm not really talented in music, I have a few family members who are. So may be passing this along to them to work on (maybe by brothers or my husband??).

Also keep in mind, even though I sang some of the solos in my 6th grade music class, I haven't sung much since my younger school years. So my voice is a little rusty here. Kinda embarassing really on the high notes.

Day 140: Audio Burps

I listen to books on cd a lot in my car. We don't have that new fangled MP3 import thing either, so it's the "old school" physical CDs. Lately I've been listening to Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry (referred to me by my friend Lauri). A great book. There was a moment in the car when a very crucial, climax part of the book was coming up and the disk started skipping. For some reason I just loved how it sounded. Kindof a singing, confusing poetry. I stopped the car, restarted from the skipping part and created a recording. Here it is.

By the way, I would highly recommend the book—read via book, ebook, or listened to by audio disc.

Day 36: A Creativity Talking-To

Today 2 things happened related to the 33rd:

1.) I had lunch with my husband and a friend who deemed themselves my honorary and voluntary Board of Trustees for The Thirty Third. They said I was not holding up my end of the bargain to create daily… as I "took a break" and didn't create yesterday, and therefore I have to create two things today. I think I've been thinking about creating too hard and need to get back to the basics and fun of it. (And probably need that reminding from this Board every so often. Smile.)

2.) I listened to RadioLab's episode "Help!" which had some really interesting insights and ideas for the creative person this week (I would highly recommend RadioLab for learning, discussion, and ideas.) The "Help!" episode was about: "trying to figure out how to make a deal with yourself when most of you doesn't want to do what the rest of you wants to do."

The episode is at the bottom of this post if you'd like to listen to it. (Around minute 27:44 is when the part about creativity sets in, but the whole thing is interesting.) Or go here to see more info.

The gist of this segment of the episode is: Sometimes you have to think of the creative thing that you are trying to create as a something, a someone. Think of it as living outside of you, that it wants to "use" YOU as its catalyst. That creativity may need to be conversed with, treated nicely, loved, nurtured, or sometimes scolded, molded, and given a good "talking-to."

At the risk of sounding absolutely wacky, I decided to give my "creativity" a "talking-to." So for Yesterday (today) I created an audio segment of my giving a "talking-to" to my creative self.

Ok. So... Don't laugh. Just listen.

Radio-Lab, "Help!":

(Also this made me think of Jessica's Daily Affirmation. This YouTube video has been passed around the world unendingly, but if you haven't seen it, take a look.)
